MAKERS JOURNAL

As kids we were always interested in the Process isn’t?

Cycling around aimlessly having to reach nowhere or telling our parents a long madeup story which actually had no point at all !

Fuelled a little from the above emotion and a genuine curiosity in the idea of ‘Making’, through #BTRTmakersJournal we try to strengthen the connect between Process, People and Product.

We are makers, we work with many others. We would like to bring you a insider view into the Maker scene that we know and love, to tell the tales of the hands and/or machines that execute a collective dream.

Asthagiri Street, nestled on the quaint by-lanes of Varadharaja Perumal temple in Kancheepuram, is one of the places, one can see entire families engrossed in creating moulds, applying lime, drying them in bright sunshine and carefully applying colours to bring them alive.

Straw lined roads, criss crossed bamboos and enthusiastic students with cameras, announced the approach to Kumortuli, the potters colony of Kolkata where Goddess Durga takes ‘birth’. The smell of wet clay guided us into a maze of lanes and by-lanes where deft hands moulded clay into divine forms inside narrow confines.

Moulding
Moulding

During this step the clay is placed on a pottery wheel in a mould. A potter will then punch the desired form of the cup by spinning the pottery wheel and moulding the clay. This ensures that any geometric shape can be formed due to easy deformation of the material.
